Cumprindo o seu objectivo de descobrir e revelar artistas outsider portugueses, a Associa\u00e7\u00e3o Portuguesa de Arte Outsider organiza a sua primeira Exposi\u00e7\u00e3o, no Pal\u00e1cio Galveias, em Lisboa. V\u00e3o ainda realizar-se 3 Col\u00f3quios durante a Exposi\u00e7\u00e3o, dedicados \u00e0 Arte Outsider, nos s\u00e1bados dias 14, 21 e 28 de Abril, pelas 16 horas.<\/span><\/p>\n

Following the objective of discovering and revealing portuguese outsider artists, the Portuguese Association of Outsider Art organizes its first exhibition, in Pal\u00e1cio Galveias, in Lisbon. During the exhibition there will take place 3 Meetings on Outsider Art.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

A escultura de Xico Nico<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Xico Nico (Francisco Nico) nasceu em 1951, em Peniche, onde reside e possui ateli\u00ea, na Fortaleza. Desde a escola secund\u00e1ria come\u00e7ou a interessar-se pela escultura. Conclu\u00edda a especializa\u00e7\u00e3o em metalo-mec\u00e2nica, foi durante 22 anos t\u00e9cnico nesse campo. Desde 1987 foi formador de metalo-mec\u00e2nica na CERCI (cooperativa pioneira na reabilita\u00e7\u00e3o de deficientes) de Peniche, intensificando a partir desse per\u00edodo a sua actividade escult\u00f3rica, certamente fruto da sua sensibilidade e do contacto humano com os inadaptados.<\/span><\/p>\n

Participou em mais de 50 exposi\u00e7\u00f5es coletivas desde 1990. Destaque-se o 1\u00ba pr\u00e9mio da Feira Internacional de Artesanato em 2008, a Exposi\u00e7\u00e3o Coletiva \u201cFiguras e Figurado\u201d em 2008 no Pavilh\u00e3o de Portugal, as Exposi\u00e7\u00f5es Individuais, em 2010, no Edif\u00edcio Cultural e na Escola Superior de Tecnologias do Mar, em Peniche.<\/span><\/p>\n

Grande parte das esculturas de Xico Nico deve ser considerada Arte Outsider, e n\u00e3o Artesanato, e s\u00f3 assim as suas pe\u00e7as podem ser compreendidas e valorizadas, na sua plenitude. Com efeito, os elementos constituintes do conceito desse tipo de arte, definidos por Jean Dubuffet, est\u00e3o presentes em Xico Nico: um artista autodidata, uma tem\u00e1tica e uma express\u00e3o formal fruto do seu sentir profundo, pouco influenciada pela arte de tradi\u00e7\u00e3o erudita, e at\u00e9, nalguns casos, utilizando t\u00e9cnicas pr\u00f3prias e sui generis.<\/span><\/p>\n

A not\u00e1vel e invulgar escultura de Xico Nico revela-nos um universo figurativo muito pessoal e perturbador, onde predomina n\u00e3o s\u00f3 o ser humano como uma vasta diversidade de animais. Todas estas figuras apresentam caracter\u00edsticas singulares, exprimindo enorme for\u00e7a intr\u00ednseca de sentimentos, por vezes m\u00faltiplos e contrastantes, incluindo alguns de pendor expressionista ou provindos do inconsciente, pontuada, no caso dos animais, pela ironia ou pela inventividade no estado puro, s\u00edntese do olhar do artista reinventando o real. Nas suas esculturas os animais exibem fulgor an\u00edmico e soberbo, de corpo estranho ou mesmo ins\u00f3lito.<\/span><\/p>\n

No modo como trata os materiais que domina (sobretudo o ferro e a pedra), Xico Nico consegue uma rar\u00edssima harmonia com o tema e a expressividade, mais vis\u00edvel quando escolhe os tipos de pedras (proporcionando diversificadas e inusitadas leituras), as pedras calc\u00e1rias, recolhidas nas praias de Peniche, algumas exibindo o desgaste ou os orif\u00edcios que o mar primeiro modelou. Xico Nico adora criar formas novas e espont\u00e2neas, quase experimentais, afastando-se de um \u201cestilo\u201d estereotipado de autor, e, neste aspecto, ele \u00e9 tamb\u00e9m um outsider, mesmo nos poucos casos em que se poder\u00e1 aproximar de uma nova arte popular.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tanto ao evocar um rosto humano, como ao interpretar a ess\u00eancia de um animal, as suas esculturas s\u00e3o obras poderosas, que demonstram a for\u00e7a interior e a surpreendente inventividade de um artista aut\u00eantico.<\/span><\/p>\n

Xico Nico\u2019s sculpture<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Xico Nico (Francisco Nico) was born in 1951, in Peniche, where he lives and has an atelier, in the Fortress. While at secondary school he started being interested in sculpture. After he graduated in metal-mechanics, he worked in that field for 22 years, In 1987 he became a teacher at CERCI (a pioneer institution for the disabled) of Peniche, developing at that time his sculpture activity. He has taken part in more than 50 collective exhibitions since 1990. We can point out the first prize at the International Folk Art Fair held in Lisbon in 2008, the collective exhibition at Portugal Pavilion in 2008, the solo exhibitions held in 2010 at the Culture Building and at the Sea Technology School, in Peniche.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Most part of Xico Nico\u2019s sculpture must be considered Outsider Art, and only through that perspective they can be fully understood and admired. The characteristics appointed by Jean Dubuffet in its concept of Outsider Art match Xico Nico\u2019s profile: an untrained artist, with forms and subjects deriving from its own depths, with little or no influence from erudite art, and even creating his own techniques.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The remarkable and unusual sculptures of Xico Nico present a very personal and disturbing figurative world, where the main actors are humans and also a wide range of animals, displaying strong feelings, sometimes multiple and contrasting, including some of an expressionist approach, or proceeding from the unconscious, and, in the case of animals, stressed by irony and pure inventiveness. Trough the way Xico Nico uses materials, mainly iron and stone, he obtains a very rare harmony between subject and form, specially when he chooses the stones he picks himself at Peniche\u2019s beaches, stones weathered and with perforations shaped by the sea.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Either evoking a human face or unfolding the essence of an animal, his sculptures are powerful works that demonstrate the inner force and the stunning inventiveness of a genuine artist.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
